Compassion In Action: How JFS At Home Helped One Family Navigate A Difficult Journey

When Corey-Jan Albert began noticing signs of her mother Joice’s cognitive decline last year, she and her brother faced a painful reality: their mother could no longer safely live entirely on her own.

With Corey-Jan living in Atlanta and her brother in New York, the family worried constantly about their mother, who remained in Boca Raton. A previous experience with another caregiving company had left them frustrated by inconsistency and poor communication, making the search for trusted support even more urgent.

That support came through JFS at Home.

“From our very first phone call, everyone at the organization met us with equal parts compassion and professionalism,” Corey-Jan wrote in a recent letter to JFS at Home leadership. “They took the time to understand not only my mother’s needs, but also her personality and demeanor.”

What began as companion care several days a week quickly expanded after Joice suffered a stroke last August. Corey-Jan recalls how schedulers Mimi and Carly responded immediately, ensuring there were no gaps in care while helping the family navigate an overwhelming situation from hundreds of miles away.

“There must be a picture of Mimi and Carly in the dictionary next to the word ‘responsiveness,’” she wrote.

Over time, Joice’s caregivers became much more than aides and companions. Team members including Rafie, Ora, Gary, Djenie and Bedy Ann provided not only practical support, but also warmth, companionship, and reassurance during an increasingly difficult chapter for the family.

After a second stroke earlier this year, the JFS at Home team once again rallied around Joice – visiting her in the hospital, supporting her rehabilitation, and helping coordinate her care every step of the way.

“I’m fully convinced that Team Joice’s presence contributed significantly to Mom’s physical recovery,” Corey-Jan shared.

Eventually, doctors recommended transitioning Joice to a memory care community closer to her children. While bittersweet, Corey-Jan says the family will always remain grateful for the support they received.

“JFS at Home has been the difference between feeling panicked and terrified for my mother’s health and feeling reassured of her well-being,” she wrote. “I truly don’t know what we would have done without you.”
